Chris Haven’s poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in Smartish Pace, New York Quarterly, The Normal School, and Linebreak. He teaches creative writing at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, where he edits Wake: Great Lakes Thought & Culture. “Emmanuel and the Gift” is part of a series of poems about Terrible Emmanuel, a cranky, fallible figure short on benevolence who considers himself to be the supreme being.
